Washington

UEA member companies with operations in the state of Washington have the opportunity to join a group retrospective (retro) rating plan for their workers’ compensation program, through UEA’s partner association, Washington Employers Association. 

Since 1985, participating companies in the Washington Employers plan have enjoyed refunds of over $87 million.  This represents an average return of nearly 30% of premiums paid to the Department of Labor & Industries (L & I).

Retrospective rating plans are a premium rebate opportunity for employers that succeed in keeping their workers’ compensation claim costs lower than the premiums they pay to L & I.  The premise of the program is helping employers reduce accident frequency and severity so claim costs paid by L & I are reduced.  When refunds are issued by L & I to the retro plan, the entire refund is returned to the participating members – the Association retains nothing. 

The Washington Employers group retro program has more than 380 company participants and annual premium of approximately $34 million.  This substantial premium base provides a favorable spread of risk and increases the potential for refunds to the plan. 

In addition to the potential for return of premium dollars, participating employers also receive:

  • Assigned team of claim representatives
  • 24-hour claims reporting hotline
  • Assistance with developing successful, transitional return-to-work programs
  • A safety/loss control professional to develop and monitor a successful safety program that reduces accident frequency and severity
  • Low or no-cost safety training
